Now you are ready to learn.

Once upon a time, a young farm boy decided to learn Arabic. He didn’t really know how to start, so he sought the advice of the wise old man in his village. The wise man was well-known, able to speak more than 12 languages, yet he was humble and kept mostly to himself. Even so, he was always happy to share his wisdom with anyone who sought it.

And so the farm boy went to the cottage where the wise man lived and asked him how to start learning Arabic. The wise man replied, “First, tell me why you want to learn, and I will tell you whether you are ready to begin or not.”

“Hmm… I don’t know why. I just want to learn it.”

“You are not yet ready to learn,” the wise man said.

The boy, frustrated, couldn’t believe what the wise man had told him. Speechless, he left.

The next day, he came back, this time ready to give an answer: “I think I can get a good job in the marketplace if I know the language, and I’ll make good money and won’t have to be a farmer anymore.”

“You are not yet ready to learn,” the wise man said.

Again, he was angry and confused, and went home to think of a better reason.

The following day, he came back and told the wise man: “Everyone tells me that Arabic is impossible to learn. I want to prove them wrong, then they’ll respect me.”

“You are not yet ready to learn,” the wise man said.

Another day: “There are so many beautiful Arab girls. I want to learn Arabic so that I can impress them and get one to marry me.”

“You are not yet ready to learn,” the wise man said.

This went on for several more days.

“After I learn Arabic, I’ll tell my friend to learn it too, so we can have a secret language to tell jokes in.”

“You are not yet ready to learn,” the wise man said.

“The scholars say that learning other languages is good for the brain, so I’ll be smarter than everyone else in school.”

“You are not yet ready to learn,” the wise man said.

“I want to learn Arabic first, and then I’ll learn many more languages and be famous and wise like you someday.”

“You are not yet ready to learn,” the wise man said.

Finally, the boy was fed up. He went back to the old man and told him: “I’m tired of you or anyone else telling me whether I’m ready or able to learn Arabic! I met some other boys and girls who gave up learning a language because you told them they weren’t ready. But you know what? I don’t care what anyone else thinks. I find the language simply beautiful to the ear. I love hearing old Arabic songs and stories and poems, and someday I want to go to the land of the Arabs and learn about their culture, and I’m going to speak with them in their own language no matter what!”

“Now you are ready to learn.”
